Tellkamp Systems, Inc. of Santa Fe Springs, California
has designed and integrated equipment to produce the Permastar™ chrome
process for aftermarket wheels and automotive and motorcycle accessories.
Permastar™ is a two-step nickel chrome and chrome physical vapor
deposition (PVD) process laid down using a vacuum chamber. This technology
is being licensed by Goodrich Technology Corporation of Pittsburg,
California to American Powder Coating of Downey, California, where
the new equipment is installed. Dupont Powder Coating U.S.A. Inc. provides
the material for the powder base coat and clear top coat which is an
integral part of the process. |

Tellkamp Systems modified one of American Powder Coating’s three conventional powder lines for use with the PVD process. Now the base coat and clear coat are applied on either side of a climate-controlled clean room that houses the PVD equipment. As part of the integration, extensive modifications were made to the ovens. Also, custom fixtures to powder coat rotating wheels and other parts were added to the powder booths. |
The resulting PVD system at American Powder Coating is the first full time production job shop for PVD coatings. “We certainly expect to do our share of learning and fine tuning recipes for different parts” said Doug Gilmore of American Powder Coating, “but our main focus is on commercial production”. As for the equipment design and modifications, American Powder Coating could not have picked a better partner. Tellkamp Systems built all three powder coating lines at American Powder Coating. Plus, according to Doug, “Tellkamp Systems has experience integrating complex and valuable process equipment. They do it all the time on paint systems with large part packages.” | ![]() Permastar® Wheel with Dupont Powder |
